It feels as if it won’t grow dark at all today, and so I lose much time waiting for dusk. I slowly get the paper ready. I leave home and set out through the warm night with the intention of finding a suitable place to sleep. Outside of town, a freshly mown field had previously caught my attention. I undress, lay out the paper, and lie down on it. A shooting star leaves behind an unusually long and bright trail. I try to close my eyes and fall asleep. Even the sligh-test movement of my body elicits the crunching sound of paper. I notice the surface of the earth, the prickling of the remaining stalks in the field, and above me the moon, the stars, and the boundlessness of the universe. I sense a strange feeling, perhaps fear and cold, which at first seemed almost imperceptible. I drive off some pesky insects, I feel the soft touch of the wings of moths. As it grows cold, the slow shivers of my body grow constantly faster. With dewfall, I begin to cough. My body is shaking continuously now. I see a shooting star, and the moon, whose movement is my only evidence of time, changes position until it is directly above me. The cold becomes unbearable, and it is clear that I will not fall asleep tonight. I try to get up. My body is too stiff, but in the end I manage somehow. I roll up the paper, which has gotten soft in the moist air, get dressed, and set out on the journey back. The act of walking warms my body. I arrive home, avoid looking at the clock, make myself some tea, and write these lines. Outside, the new day is beginning to break.
